The new SAT fails to meet expectations
We have always known it, but now the esteemed experts seem to agree… the new
and improved SAT exam is not much better at predicting freshman university performance than the
original SAT exam. So, it looks like the additional writing
section had little (if any) impact on the new SAT’s ability to
predict the grades of prospective university students.
The New America Foundation say… the College
Board added the writing section to the SAT amid criticism that the old
test was not an accurate predictor of college success and that it gave
an unfair advantage to wealthier students who could afford coaching.
The report, based on the test scores and grades of 150,000 students at
schools across the country, found that the new exam is little better
than the old one and that high school grades remain the most accurate
predictor of academic success for students in their freshman year of
college.
So, folks, that about sums it. Four years of hard work in high school are a much better indicator of future performance than one single exam. No surprise there. Will this
cause the admissions’ committee to have pity on you if you score is less than stellar? I doubt it…
